My initial reason of volunteering was very realistic and simple: to enhance my profile so that I could easily obtain a scholarship to study abroad. I applied for a position at a non-profit organization teaching English to underprivileged children. However, after my first day of volunteering, I knew it was not all about the scholarship any more. Days in days out, my love for the children kept growing more and more profoundI was delightful to see their smile and their innocent laugh. I got angry when finding out that they did not do homework. And I was dejected to see them desirably looking at other children in parents’ arms. Yet, the feeling I feel towards them the most is gratefulness. “Uyen, promise us you will help those like us too, please!” And they made me cross my heart.
On the path to fulfilling my promise, I was lucky to know Volunteer House Vietnam, a home for travellers and disadvantaged children, who want to learn English. From the first day I knew VHV via Facebook, a special emotion has arisen in me. I like their helpful posts ranging from soft skills to opportunities to broaden ourselves. I love the logo portraying holding hands to build a home, the fondly stories at the English classes, and the intrepidity of the Founder of VHV. All those have led to my decision to become a part of VHV (hopefully someday I will be on the cover of VHV website). To the day I received emails from VHV, I have firmly believed that this would be an ideal environment for me to dedicate what I’ve got, and more importantly to keep my words to the children I taught. The cordial and charming words such as “Hi”, “Nice weekend” from the genial and open-minded leader and the professional but friendly emails give me a sense of confidence and motivation to move forward.
Volunteering as a member of Communications team at VHV, I do not directly work with the children, listen to their stories, nor sympathize with them. But there is one fact that appeases me: I will always do my best and use my abilities to bring VHV closer to the society and to the benevolent, so that VHV’s loveable children will have better access to many greater opportunities to improve their lives socially and academically, and to firm their belief in a brighter future. Thank you Volunteer House Vietnam for being a part of my meaningful path.
