Charity program ” Share Your Cake “

Charity program ” Share Your Cake “

1. The ” Share your cake ” story

When I was a little, how needy, Mid-fall is the chance for me to gather with Rin, to sharpen bamboo straw and glue the lanterns by dried rice. What a pity it was as right after lanterns were finished, grandma had always made me to look after my little brother, and hence, at no time did I have the chance to enjoy the festive atmosphere with friends.

That childhood memories, also, I badly wanted to taste my own moon cake. Grandma brought home 5, one for Xi, one for Bom, another for Long and Hung, and the last one was for me to share with little Hanh, my cousin. She tried to comfort me by telling me that Hanh was just 2 years old so she could not eat much, and the rest was for me. Little did she know that, although Hanh could not enjoy the cake much, the cake did not remain the same through her mischievous hands. All that I could taste were left trifling in the silver-like cover.

Time flies, people grow. I then got a job and money, and tried to buy moon cakes to help filling up the missing part of my memories when staying with grandma. There was a time I bought the most expensive one at Tour Les Jours, a famous bakery. Nevertheless, it did not taste as delicious as it was supposed to. Insipid, flavorless were all that I could feel. I brought it back to the store and asked for compensation. The clerk smiled at me, said it was the people to have changed through years, not the cake dear. Till then did I realize, childhood only comes to us once, for once only, and if it turns to adulthood already, we can never buy a moon cake with the exact taste from our good old times, no matter where we are.

All in all, I have not known till now how the taste of a moon cake of childhood is like. And I wish, if only, someone was there and kindly offered me a cake, how grateful I would be.

So that is it. And I think, as I used to wish, many children would also be grateful if I can bring them the moon cakes with that “childhood flavor”. Therefore, the event of “Share your cake” was born.

Last year, when I told my friend about this idea of bringing the moon cakes which were given to the company to young children, he was astonished and questioned my kindness. I smiled, to be honest, maybe I was not that generous. However, how could I bother keeping those moon cakes which could possibly fatten me up while the children out there were wishing for one, for a cake that could magically recall old good cozy memories…

Some people may claim that, it is better to leave those children disadvantaged, later they will absolutely be motivated to grow stronger and tougher. Nonetheless, I prefer the vision of well funded children later become successful and bring their cakes to other needy kids, as well help spread the message of how they received the cakes once, from which their faith in life had been strongly reinforced…
